SPEEDING

Running behind schedule? Don’t take it out on the road. Speeding is a choice that immediately increases your risk of a fine (see ya Euro Summer plans) and worse, increases your risk of crashing by 25%. Arriving fashionably later is better than not at all.

ABOUT ONE IN FOUR OF FATAL CRASHES IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS INVOLVED SPEEDING

EXCEEDING THE SPEED LIMIT BY JUST 3KM/H INCREASES YOUR RISK OF CRASHING BY 25%. AT 5KM/H OVER THE LIMIT IN A 60 ZONE, YOUR CRASH RISK DOUBLES.

INCREASING YOUR SPEED FROM 60 TO 70 KM/H OVER A 10KM TRIP WILL ONLY SAVE YOU 86 SECONDS. STICK TO THE SPEED LIMIT AND REDUCE YOUR RISK OF CRASHING

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I SPEED?

At higher speeds, you’re more likely to:

SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE CRASH RISK AND SEVERITY OF INJURIES
LOSE CONTROL OF YOUR VEHICLE
FAIL TO ANTICIPATE ONCOMING HAZARDS
CAUSE OTHER ROAD USERS TO MISJUDGE SPEED OF YOUR VEHICLE
MISJUDGE HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE TO STOP

HOW WILL IT BE DETECTED?

There are three types of speed camera systems – fixed, mobile and point-to-point.

Mobile speed cameras are designed to enforce speed limits and are often located in areas identified as high-risk due to crash numbers, where there are excessive speed complaints or areas where speeding is an issue
Fixed safety cameras are placed at high risk intersections and other locations and can detect both speed and red-light offences
A point-to-point camera system is used on some freeways and measure average travel speeds over distance.

The kit is legit for catching drivers with unsafe road habits, it includes road safety cameras, mobile radar and laser equipment, high-visibility patrol cars and unmarked patrol vehicles.

THE FALLOUT

Every time you speed, you risk the chance of getting hit with some hefty consequences. These include:

A MINIMUM $254 FINE
LOSS OF DEMERIT POINTS
LICENCE SUSPENSION
VEHICLE IMPOUNDMENT

THE BOTTOM LINE

A few minutes aren’t worth a life

Studies have shown that even small increases in the speed you’re travelling can increase your risk of a crash and serious injury behind the wheel - being a few minutes late to the party doesn’t sound like a bad alternative.
